“Now what was all of that about?”

A ceramic mug of coffee drifted down and rested on my black plastic tray. Logan hovered behind me, out of my peripheral vision. Chewing on a large bite of cheesy, juicy burger, I smacked around the ketchupy goodness. Using the moment to delineate my thoughts, I gloried in his tension and the spite of the moment when to speak with my mouth full would be quite rude. Logan backed up and walked around me, sitting down across the table from me. He rested his elbows on the table and clasped his hands, intertwining his fingers with patience and resolve. Placing his chin on his knuckles, he stared at me, close-mouthed, observing. My eyes met his for a moment, but had to drop his iron gaze. Besides, those three shards of lettuce and crumbs of meat and bread on my plate served as fodder for reflective meditation.

“Saylor, I’m okay with you freaking out about your first mission. It’s perfectly normal.”

I continued chewing.

“And you proved yourself. Command is impressed with your performance. You haven’t even qualified on a lot of the training assessments—”

“So, seriously, why did you send me out?” I asked mid-chew. “Why did Command pull that little experiment?” My dinner had begun to stick to the inside of my stomach like lumps of charcoal.

“It wasn’t an experiment. We needed all the help we could get.” Logan shook his head, looking around at the quiet hall. One table across the room housed six soldiers finishing up a late-evening snack and playing cards. Unsatisfied their attentions were occupied, he lowered his voice. “I need to get your full report.”

“I already gave it to Tanya.”

“You left a few holes,” he added, his eyebrows narrowing, those turquoise eyes blazing in curiosity and reproof.

“How so?” I stuck a forkful of lettuce in my mouth, wishing I had a bigger cup full of water. I reached to the translucent tumbler and shook it, ice rattling in the bottom. “I submitted a nice and tidy paper.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Spell it out to me, Lieutenant. I wrote what happened. I did leave out the part stating you left me on the field to fend for myself without proper training. Would you like me to include that? And the part where I disabled, yet didn’t destroy, a T2? I can for sure put that succulent morsel in the report.”

Logan’s jaw tightened. Those three deep lines solidified across his forehead. He unclasped his hands, grabbing the edge of the table. He waited a beat before he spoke again.

“You must include the entire account of what happened in your reports. Provide an accurate, vivid re-creation. For example, did you encounter any interesting conversations? What did you hear on the field? What did you see? How—” He lowered his voice and straightened his shoulders. “How did you know two were headed toward us before the PBA?” He leaned toward me, emanating interest, distrust, and speculation. “What is your secret?”

The leafy greens caught in my throat.
